THE NIGHT FERRY'S WINDOW - an original prose-fiction extract Noor chose the seat against the window because it offered only one neighbour. Across the aisle, a child in a silver raincoat counted the island lights aloud while his grandmother slept with both hands around her bag. "That one moved," the child said. Noor kept reading. In the glass, the printed page floated over black water. The child's face appeared inside a paragraph, pale and intent, while the cabin lights doubled every passenger and sent their reflections travelling beside the ferry. "The lights don't move," Noor said. "We do." The child considered this, then pressed one finger to the window. A yellow point slid beneath it and disappeared behind Noor's reflected shoulder. "You moved that one." She almost corrected him again. Instead she lowered the book. Together they tested the glass: lighthouse, cabin bulb, fishing boat, a red light neither could place. Each became stationary or wandering depending on whether they watched the water, the island or their own reflections. The grandmother woke as the ferry slowed.
